News December 2000

December 30: French radio station France Inter will kick off their New Year's Eve celebration at 8:15 p.m. by presenting an hour's worth (twelve songs) from the November 1999 Kit Kat Klub show. Some of the show was broadcast live at the time (including a webcast as part of the Amex Blue series), but this will be the first time for a traditional radio broadcast in Europe as far as we are aware.

December 22: It's always nice to know that some of our Teenage Wildlife community members are becoming famous in their own right. One of those seemingly on their way to stardom is our own Carla Rhodes (aka Piccadilly), a multitalented comedian, ventriloquist, musician and artist, most famous (or infamous) in Bowie circles for her David Bowie puppet shown with Carla in the picture below. Carla is getting some national television exposure in the USA later this month in The Learning Channel documentary Dummies!, a show about the art of ventriloquism. Carla will be prominently featured in the series which airs at the following times:

TLCDec 30 1:00 a.m.
TLCDec 30 10:00 p.m.
TLCDec 31 4:00 p.m.

The footage for this particular documentary was shot two years ago, before the birth of her Bowie puppet, but Carla tells us that Bowie is still prominently featured in the interview... on an album cover on the wall behind her. Some of you may also know that Carla is the webmistress for the recently relaunched MarkPlati.com, indicating her ties to the Bowie world are still strong. All this and she's still just 18!

Congratulations Carla on your success!

December 17: We don't usually write a news story about an individual fan contribution, but a recent project sent to us titled 2. Contamination is noteworthy fo the incredible detail and effort that has gone into "finishing something Bowie didn't". Extending the characters and story behind 1. Outside, hardcore Bowie fan Krettis has composed a Nathan Adler diary Part II, subtitled A surreal Death of Fortis Qonquerlite and included a complete set of lyrics for songs appropriate for a 2. Contamination album. Among them are such titles as Contamination, West, Artstatus, Minotaur In A Roar and Angels Voice Madness (Grace Demo). These transcripts will be supplemented with a Shockwave version currently scheduled for December 31 at Krettis' own web site.

We encourage you to visit both Krettis' 2. Contamination website and download the initial diaries and lyrics to see the creativity and thought which has gone into reinventing Bowie's own Outside saga. (Ed: the download is Windows-only).

December 13: This month's Goldmine magazine interviews Annette Peacock, the singer/songwriter who has just released An Acrobat's Heart, her first album in over two decades. As we reported in October and later confirmed by BowieNet, Peacock has been asked by Bowie to work with him on his new album produced by Tony Visconti, set to start recording in the beginning of 2001. In Goldmine's interview, Peacock was asked the following:

Q: Didn't you once kick David Bowie out of your recording session?

Peacock: Bob Ringe, who was producing me, had signed up David Bowie, Lou Reed, and myself. He must have mentioned something to David, who became curious and came to the studio. But I didn't allow anyone in, so I told Bob to please ask him to leave. That was my introduction to David Bowie. He later asked me to work with him, playing synthesizer on Aladdin Sane, but I didn't want to do that kind of music. I'd done one rock album, I'm the one, because I'd never written anything with chord changes and a time signature before, so it was a challenge at the time. But I didn't want to do it anymore.

December 11: One of the long awaited Rustic Overtones collaborations with David Bowie as produced by Tony Visconti will get a wider release come February when the soundtrack to Russell DeGrazier's film Attraction makes its way to stores. The soundtrack, distributed by Falcon Entertainment, will include Man Without A Mouth, one of the two songs which Bowie contributed to almost 18 months ago (the other being Sector Z). These songs were expected to be released on Rustic Overtones album This Is Rock 'N Roll over a year ago, but various delays seem to have kept that album on ice for the time being.

Attraction will be director DeGrazier's debut film. It played recently at the Toronto Film Festival and is expected to be released by Trimark Pictures in February of next year. Look for the soundtrack to be released around the same time.

December 5: It is with sadness that we report one of our long time readers John P. Oreskovich, better known as JohnO age 45 of Cleveland, died suddenly on October 31 of natural causes. JohnO was a regular contributor to Teenage Wildlife including this amusing Bowie chewing tobacco news item which he sent in last year. He also helped out with scans of Bowie items, photographs from concerts (most recently the Saturday Roseland show) and mentions of Bowie in the press. Weird and Gilly wrote the following memorial notice to carry the news to the large group of friends which JohnO made via the Internet.

In November of 1972 a seventeen year old JohnO saw Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars in Cleveland, Ohio and his life was changed.  Loyal to the end, JohnO celebrated his devotion to David for the last time live at Roseland, New York in June of 2000.  A huge fan of the worldwide Internet and especially of Teenage Wildlife he can be commended for his eager attitude to embrace the newest technology in sound and in vision.  JohnO will be remembered as one of the most beloved David Bowie fans ever. His love for David's music and art were unmatched in the circles of fandom.  A collector, a manager, a traveler, a pen-pal, a rocker, a DJ, and a photographer.  His childlike spirit combined with his street smarts earned him the nickname Big Brother. He was a dear friend, a kind, wonderful, loving man.  He will be forever missed.
God Bless You JohnO!

JohnO aka Big Brother

But what ever lies behind the door
There is nothing much to do
Angel or devil, I don't care
For in front of that door, there is you

JohnO, you will be missed.
